Newport High School, Bettws, 1973

Newport High School was originally sited at Queens Hill near the centre of Newport. In 1967 a competition was held for architects to design a new school to be constructed on a large site at Bettws, outside the town. The winning design, from 165 entries, was built in 1972 only to be demolished in 2009 after a new school was built on the site.

Typical classroom has north and south light sources. North light floods in at specially raised clerestories. Each ceiling bay also has fluorescent strip lighting.
